Does this appear to be the very public recreation of the slave ships,
especially at the Superdome, but also the Convention Center? The conditions
are equally horrific.
My husband visited the slave houses when he was working in Nigeria, with the
people often supplied by the greedy African kings.
New Orleans also still has the slave auction house, with its original brick
walls and copies of the advert bills of the available slaves, still intact
as Maspero's Restaurant.
New Orleans was a major import port. Depending on the source, between
500,000-650,000 people were imported as slaves, a number eerily matching the
number of blacks in the New Orleans area.
Unlike the slave trade years, in this event the public is horrified. Maybe
this time justice will be served.
Today's Wall Street's Journal has an interesting article on how the Uptown
New Orleanians are coping. Generators are supplying electricity, pools
provide flushing water and Audubon Park is serving as a helipad bringing in
ice and fresh food to the stranded, but high and dry, rich folks.
Thoughts on the outcome?
